UPAYES: REMEDIAL MEASURES
IN VEDIC ASTROLOGY ( Jyotish )
In vedic astrology there is
an important branch of it called " UPAYES
". This branch of vedic astrology deals with
remedial measures that can counteract or enhance
events or trends that are to happen in our lives. The
upayes are :
- wearing gems
- volunteer work for the
benefit of the community
- meditation
- personal sacrifices
- performance of rituals.
Such rituals are called
YAJNAS in the vedic tradition. This spiritual
tradition is at least 5000 years old. The Biswa
Kalyan Foundation provides the possibility for
anyone in the world to have yajnas performed
for them in India.
WHY YAJNAS EXIST IN THE SCIENCE
OF JYOTISH
All events in our life are the
results of our past actions (karmas). To the eyes
of our ego, favorable influences and unfavorable
influences come to our life. A vedic astrologer
can predict, from the reading of the natal chart,
what kind of influences will return to us. The
Yajnas are rituals that can enhance favorable
influences, neutralize or diminish unfavorable
influences coming in our life. The yajñas
have the power to change your karma.
Destiny is there, but it can be neutralized
by a planetary influence which will modify
the course of events that is predicted by
destiny. If we invoke the power of a Divinity
(law of nature), that can also save us. There,
everything is possible, the impossible becomes
possible. -

WHAT IS THE STRUCTURE OF A
YAJNA?
Each yajña has its own
specific set of rituals. These rituals include:
chanting of mantras, offerings; flowers, ghee
and food through a fire, to the laws of nature
(or Devas), offerings to the planets, feeding
at least 100 poor children every day, and other
rituals in or around the temple. These yajnas
requires the performance of 18, 28 over 3 days
or 108 vedic rituals over 7 days, depending on
the yajña being performed.
A yajna will act on the following
4 levels of the creation:
- DEITY
( or law of Nature) with offerings in a vedic
fire to a deity and by chanting mantras to the
deity. (This part can also be performed easily
by yourself by taking few minutes a day, ask
about planetary mantras that we have on CDs).
- FOREFATHERS:
by making offerings to your forefathers
- RISHIS:
by chanting the different parts of the vedas
for the satisfaction of the Rishis and the creation.
- HUMANITARIAN WORK:
after each yajna, the food that has been prepared as offerings for the rituals are then given
to poor children and to anyone who wishes to receive such blessed food. Because of this,
it has been possible to serve about 250 000 meals at our center during the year 2000. Ypu
will also be contributing to the free education of 350 children, education which is provided
at our ashram. In the year 2000 we have also started to provide free medical services in
allopathic and homeopathic medicine to the villagers with free homeopathic remedies.
WHEN A YAJNA SHOULD BE
PERFORMED?
Our yajñas are performed
in India. From your natal chart, your Jyotishi
(vedic astrologer) is able to predict any major
trend that may occur in the future. According
to his predictions you are more prepare to orient
your life in a way that your energy will be canalized
in directions that will bring you more fulfillment.
The yajñas have the power to change your
karma. Ideally the yajña should be performed
before an unfavorable influence starts to bring
negativity in our life, so we don't have to reap
the negativity that we have sown in the past.
In the case of a favorable influence it would
also be good to do the yajna just before the period
starts.
HOW LONG DOES A YAJNA LAST?
Depending on your recommendation,
the yajña that will be performed for your
benefit will last either 3 or 7 days.
WHEN AND WHERE DOES IT TAKE PLACE?
The yajñas are performed
in a yajña shtalla (a kind of outdoor temple)
at the Biswa Kalyan Foundation located in, Nabadwip,
West-Bengal, India.
Due to the difference of time
zones between India and North America, a yajña,
for example, scheduled on a Wednesday morning
at 6:30 a.m.. in India, would start for you at
8:00 p.m. Tuesday evening (EST). Usually a yajña
will always start very early in the morning and
will last until noon for a short recess and will
start again to continue until 2:30 pm. The exact
moment will be determined by our jyotishi in India.
You will be advised of the date and time that
it will start.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING A YAJNA?
Almost anything can happen.
Every person is unique, so everyone will experience
it differently. However, there are few things
that are more common.
If the yajña takes place
while you are sleeping, it is possible that the
energy generated by the yajña will provoke
a light sleep. If this is the case for you, you
should remain in bed and rest. Don't get up to
watch TV, read or don't go for a walk, just rest.
If you practice a meditation technique, it is
a good time to practice it, if you can't sleep.
Some people experience the total opposite, they
will sleep like a log, while other people will
dream more than usual, or will only be more conscious
of their dreams. Some people have also noticed
a general feeling of well being during the week
that the yajña was performed, a subtle
feeling of inner lightness.
It is also very possible that
the week goes by and you will have the impression
that nothing was particularly different during
that week.
It is important that you understand
that whatever will be your experience during the
yajna, there is no direct connection between
what you will experience during that week and
the quality of the results that you will get from
the yajna.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE BEFORE I CAN NOTICE ANY
RESULTS FROM THE YAJNA?
This will also vary from one
person to another. It is possible that you start
to experience some benefits on the very first
day that you decide to have a yajna performed.
The attention of the mind is a very powerful tool
of evolution. However, in general, people start
to experience results in the first month following
the yajña. But for some people it might
take up to three months before starting to see
some results. Also we have noticed that when a
planet is extremely afflicted, the subjective
experience is lesser, but the yajña remain
a very good thing to do. The key is to remain
innocent and patient.
Please keep in mind that nature
has an infinite organizing power, and the results
from the yajña in some case can come from
unexpected directions. Again, remain innocent
and patient.
You may call us three months
after the yajña has been performed to verify
the results that you received. But if after three
month you have not experienced any results of
any kind, please give us a call so we can bring
this fact to the attention of our pundits in India.
